You can do almost anything using sudo, so typically you do not need to set a root password. On Ubuntu, root pwd is locked or not set. Typing sudo all the time is a pain in the neck. So, if you want to set root pwd:
To become root user and issue passwd:
sudo -i
OR set a password for root this way: sudo passwd root To become root: su -
